Denton lived at 54 Hadlow Road when he moved to Tonbridge from his nursing home in Broadstairs. Described by JMC as a functional, rather dreary Victorian pile, it was demolished some years ago and is now a block of flats. The pictures from Google maps below show Cavendish Court, which is where 54 Hadlow Road once stood, and numbers 44 and 46 Hadlow Road which shows how Denton’s Tonbridge home probably looked before being demolished.
Dr Jack Easton, whom Denton followed to live in Tonbridge, lived a mile south of 54 Hadlow Road, at 42 Pembury Road. Denton describes with typically brutal self-honesty his embarrassing visit to Dr Easton’s house in A Fragment of a Life Story.
Although never a big drinker, Denton socialised at the Angel Hotel from time to time. Situated next to the train station, it had stood on the site of an ancient priory since the 15th century, but was demolished in the early 1970s and became a Lipton’s supermarket. Today, it’s a branch of Poundstretcher, but Angel Lane remains on what would have been the Angel Hotel’s eastern side.
